If you like Mexican culture and Mexican traditions, you’ll love this video montage from Tianguis Turistico, Mexico”s annual tourism conference.
I attend this gigantic event every year to write about the latest Mexico travel news and travel trends for TravelAge West, the leading travel trade publication in the western United States. But one of my favorite things to do is to simply walk the convention floor and photograph the many attendees who dress in traditional attire and costumes that represent a variety of states and regions around Mexico. Since last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic, it was wonderful to see thousands of travel industry professionals from around Mexico and around the world gather in sunny Mérida, the capital of the state of Yucatan. I put together this travel video to showcase some of my favorite photos of the participants.

While most attendees go for the standard business casual look, a variety of exhibitors get creative on the trade show floor, showcasing colorful costumes and traditional clothing from a variety of destinations. I photographed beautiful outfits from a variety of Mexican states, including Yucatan, Jalisco, Campeche, San Luís Potosí, Nayarit, Coahuila and Tamaulipas.
I also appreciated the creativity of the festively garbed performers that represented companies like Oasis Hotels and Resorts, which owns well-known all-inclusive hotels in Cancún, and Grupo Xcaret, which owns multiple eco-themed parks in the Mexican Caribbean and will open a new park in Yucatan in 2022; the company also owns two lovely all-inclusive Riviera Maya hotels — the family-friendly Hotel Xcaret Mexico and adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte, and will soon open a third, the luxurious La Casa de la Playa (I recently stayed in Hotel Xcaret Arte, so stay tuned for the video tour on my YouTube channel).
Whether you’re wearing a costume or not, Tianguis Turístico is the place to be for anyone who’s involved in Mexico’s tourism industry. There were government tourism representatives, travel advisors, Mexico tour operators and executives from a wide array of Mexico hotel companies. During the day, we met in the convention center, learning about the latest tourism services and products, and getting up to speed on things to do in various Mexican destinations. There were lots of lovely visuals showcasing the beauty of Mexico beach destinations, gorgeous colonial cities in Mexico and plenty of brochures designed to entice and foster new ideas for Mexico vacations.

In the evening, we were treated to some pretty amazing receptions, cocktail parties and celebrations, all of which provided additional opportunities for networking. The states of Yucatán and Guanajuato both hosted spectacular gatherings in historic haciendas just outside of the city of Mérida.
I learned a lot about what Mexico has to offer during this trip — and even more about things to do in Mérida and the state of Yucatan. I thank Yucatan’s tourism office and EnRoute Communications (a top public relations firm that represents travel industry clients) for their help with this (and recommend that you visit the Yucatan tourism site to learn more about what this beautiful state offers.
