Easter Island Experience: Celebrating Tapati at Posada de Mike Rapu
The Tapati Festival — an annual celebration on Easter Island that’s something like a cross between a carnival, a sporting event and arts gathering — is so popular that the population of the legendary destination nearly doubles, as visitors are invited to join in the competitions. Posada de Mike Rapu / explora Rapa Nui is one possible base for spirited travelers to enjoy the many activities planned for Tapati 2012, with explora staff and guests taking part in the celebration, which starts on February 3.
Opened in December 2007, Posada de Mike Rapu is the first LEED silver certified “green hotel” in Latin America. Overlooking the roaring Pacific and the Rana Raraku Volcano where the solemn moai were born, the lodge has 30 rooms as well as a relaxation area with pool, jacuzzi, sauna and massage room. Dining is a cultural experience in its own right, with cuisine rich in seafood created from typical Rapa Nui ingredients.
In addition to participating in the festival activities, explora Rapa Nui offers daily excursions on foot, by bicycle and in the ocean (boat trips, snorkeling, fishing and surfing), all with different levels of intensity and duration.
Rates start at $2,385 for a three-night stay, including transfers, accommodations, full board, bar and daily explorations with bilingual guides and equipment; boats, vehicles and bicycles. For more information or to make reservations, visit the website at www.explora.com.
