Beyond Facebook: 6 Cool Apps for Latin America Travel

Getting connected: Friendthem is an app that allows people to friend people on Facebook without searching.

We all know how addictive apps and be, and for travelers, having some insider assistance while abroad can be a lifesaver. The services here may get more attention for the info they provide about U.S. destinations, but these 6 cool apps for Latin America travel may also be helpful when wandering around the hemisphere. Whether you’re looking for a trendy Mexico City restaurant or a fast conversion from reais to dollars on your next Brazil trip, check these out.

OpenTable— OpenTable lets you make reservations at more than 13,000 restaurants — largely in the United States and Canada, but also in Puerto Rico and Mexico. The app shows you what reservation times are available before you put in your request. You can also read diner reviews and view menus.

Friendthem — This location-based connectivity app has easily configured privacy controls, helping travelers send Facebook friend requests to people they meet in the real world. It can be a useful tool for connecting with people you meet along the way.

Hotels by Orbitz — This popular booking site (disclaimer: I’m the Orbitz business travel blogger!) has a pretty cool free app that gives travelers easy access to thousands of hotels, with comparison tools and a very useful map that allows you to locate exactly where each hotel is.

TripIt— TripIt links to your e-mail account and picks up every confirmation number that comes into your inbox.  Any flight, hotel, or even dinner reservation that contains a confirmation number will be put into one single organized itinerary, all in one place.  Flight delays and last-minute changes sent to your e-mail will be updated automatically.

Google Translate — If you’re headed anywhere outside the English-speaking world, chances are this app will come in handy on your trip. Even if the people you meet can hold their own with English, they’ll likely appreciate it when you take a stab at it in their native tongue.

XE Currency — XE Currency is a useful tool for converting money from all over the world, helping users to better understand just how much cash they should expect to receive in the event of an exchange.

I’d like to do a Latin America-specific feature about what local and regional apps are best for travelers. If you have some personal favorites beyond these 6 cool apps for Latin America travel, please let me know!
