Gian Kevin: Romantic Latin Pop Music, with Puerto Rican Flair

LatinFlyer.com is all about Latin America travel, but I also love to highlight rising talent from around the region. Recently, I came across the impressive debut music video from Gian Kevin, a Puerto Rican cantante with clear talent in the Latin pop genre. In this exclusive interview, Gian Kevin speaks about his influences and his first video.

LatinFlyer: Where are you from originally?
Gian: I was born in Brooklyn New York, then I moved to Puerto Rico and since then, I’ve lived there. Now I have plans to move forward to Miami and live there for a while.

What are your biggest musical influences?

I mostly listen to and like R&B and pop music and some electro genres too. I have big influences from Christina Aguilera, Beyonce and Bruno Mars. Also from my Island I love Kany Garcia, Ednita Nazario, Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin. They all have [contributed to] my musical flavor.

How would you describe your music?

My music are my thoughts, my feelings and my way to express who I am and with who I could connect by singing. My music is fun, melancholic, deep and free. My musical style is a blend of my cultural roots and what is modern and fresh right now.

How would you describe Latin music in the 21st century?

Latin music has always [caused discussion] because of its big selection of elements. Now music has changed. Personally, I think that not all Latin [people] are supporting Latin music. So that’s when I realized that Latin music could get a twist and be more fun and more creative.

How was the process for your first video, which you released in February?
Wow, It was amazing. I flew from Puerto Rico to Miami to make the recordings. “A Ella,” produced by Ernesto Alejandro, was five days of hard work. The experience I had gathering with my producer, the actor’s staff and the filming company is something that has changed me completely.
