You can learn a lot about what people like by reviewing what they read and what they look at online. And that’s especially true when it comes to travel, since traveling is by nature a very visual experience. That makes reviewing the top posts and social media content of the year an interesting experience.
In 2022, a lot of people got back into the swing of travel again. As pandemic-era quarantines and restrictions faded away and more people got vaccinated, it became easier to get on the road and in the air again, whether it was for business travel, vacations or to visit family. The world began traveling again, and it’s been a wonderful thing (despite the recent challenges presented by bad weather).

I’ve been traveling at least once a month since July 2020, even before the vaccines were available, because it was my job to get out there and report on how travel was changing. But this year, in 2022, I was able to extend my range a bit more beyond my usual haunts in Mexico (I cover Mexico every month for TravelAge West, the leading travel trade publication in the western USA, and during the height of the pandemic, Mexico was one of the few nations that could easily be visited by U.S. and Canadian travelers, so there was a lot to write about).
Top Travel Blog Posts of 2022
Let’s start with the most popular posts on this blog, LatinFlyer.com, for the year. A few key lessons from this list: people are hungry for airline reviews. It appears that they appreciate detailed descriptions, photos and videos of the airline and air travel experience, so they can know what to expect when they fly. The opening this year of a brand-new airport just outside of Mexico City also created quite a bit of curiosity, too — and hence more clicks.
In terms of destinations, the most popular travel blog posts of the year were set in the Riviera Maya, which is also called the Mexican Caribbean. This region, which lies just sound of Cancun, is dotted with beautiful hotels, so it’s no surprise that two of them came up as among the most-viewed posts and hotel reviews of the year. Congrats to the Margaritaville Island Reserve Riviera Cancun (which is one of my all-time favorite small-scale all-inclusive resorts in Mexico) and the new Ventus Ha’ at Marina El Cid Marina Spa & Beach Resort (which has one of most beautiful designs of any new hotels in Mexico I’ve visited in the region) for topping the hotel rankings this year.
It’s interesting that, even though I’ve begun traveling beyond Mexico (to Panama, the Dominican Republic and Curaçao so far), the top posts of the year were still all related to Mexico as a vacation and business travel destination. Perhaps it’s Mexico’s long-standing popularity with travelers. But stay tuned — in the next post on LatinFlyer, we’ll be reviewing the top social media posts, reels and travel videos of the year, and they present a decidedly more diverse selection of engaging content from various vacation destinations in the Western Hemisphere.
