SNEAK PEEK: Hotel Americano Brings Mexico City Style to New York

Warm welcome: A stylish cocktail party gave New Yorkers a sneak peek of the brand-new Hotel Americano.

There was no name on the crystal-clean glass facade. We didn’t see a street number on the building. And attendees had to sign a liability waiver before entering — this was, the doorwoman explained, technically still a construction site.

But once inside the cocktail party this week at the not-yet-open Hotel Americano in New York City, we were treated to a fabulous evening of cocktails and generous hors d’oeuvres while mingling with a good-looking crowd at the bar, future restaurant and back patio.

Of course, LatinFlyer usually focuses on travel to Latin American destinations. But we also highlight Latin American influence around the world when we find it. And Hotel Americano, which is scheduled to open this summer, is the stylish work of Mexico City-based Grupo Habita, Mexico’s trendiest hotel company and the group responsible for first introducing the boutique hotel concept south of the border.

Hotel Americano’s lobby level — which was all we got to see during the sneak preview — is sleek and attractive. And based on my impression of the company’s other properties that I’ve visited in Mexico City and Acapulco, we should expect good things once they finish the guest rooms and the rooftop swimming pool and open their doors to the traveling public. With its location on Manhattan’s West 27th Street, the hotel is sure to attract anyone looking for proximity to Chelsea’s burgeoning art gallery scene and the famed High Line Park.

This is Grupo Habita’s first foray into the United States. Let’s hope it’s not the last.

First-class seat: Contemporary furnishings at the Hotel Americano.
Bar none: The bar at the Hotel Americano is sure to become a social hub for New York’s chelsea gallery scene.
Now that’s refreshing: The Hotel Americano aims to quench New York City’s thirst for accommodations in the stylish Chelsea art gallery district.
