A Joyous Bolivia Travel Experience, Without Leaving New York City

BY MARK CHESNUT

The Desfile Boliviano (Bolivan Parade) of New York takes place every year in the Jackson Heights district of New York City, where I live. It’s one of city’s most colorful parades, with extravagant traditional costumes from various parts of Bolivia and lots of music and dancing. I’ve only been to Bolivia once, but this brings some wonderful Bolivian flavor to the neighborhood.

This annual parade is one more reason why I love Jackson Heights — according to the New York Times, two-thirds of the population here were born outside of the United States, but no one nation or region dominates, so within a span of a few blocks you can find food and shopping from Mexico, South America, Eastern Europe, South Asia and Southeast Asia. It’s a great place to live, and a great place to take photographs and eat!
