Diverse Traditions, Diverse Costumes in Chile

WRITTEN BY Mark Chesnut

Chile has made the headlines a lot lately, thanks to the thrilling rescue of 33 miners in the northern part of the nation. This recent round of news has cast fresh light on this fascinating, diverse and welll-developed South American nation, which is certainly worth being on the itineraries of travelers and vacationers interested in Latin America vacations.
With a territory that runs more than 2,700 miles (4,300 km) from the vast deserts of the north all the way to the Southern tip of South America — not to mention Easter Island in the Pacific — it’s no surprise that the Republic of Chile is a home to diverse cultures and traditions.
During my visit earlier this year to to Chile, I got to check out several of the traditional costumes worn by people from various regions. Here are a few interesting samples of traditional Chilean clothing — including the huasos (Chilean cowboys from Chile’s central valley), participants in the Fiesta de la Tirana, an annual religious festival held in the northern town called La Tirana, and decidedly Pacific wear from Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island.
