Paseo de Montejo: Architectural Treasures of Merida, Mexico

WRITTEN BY Mark Chesnut

Merida, the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan, may date back to pre-Hispanic times (as the Mayan city called T’ho), but among its most impressive locales today is Paseo de Montejo, a broad boulevard built between 1888 and 1904 to showcase the sumptuous mansions built with newfound wealth from the harvest of henequen.
Some of these gloriously detailed, neoclassic palaces were torn down in later years. But happily, several survive — and a stroll down Paseo de Montejo (or perhaps a ride in a horse-drawn carriage) is always a rewarding experience. These are just a few of my favorite shots.
