The Disaster in Chile
My thoughts and best wishes go out to all the people affected by the massive earthquake that has struck Chile. Tragedies like this are difficult to fathom, especially when new information is still coming in.
I’m sticking close to the TV and the computer screen. Santiago’s international airport remains closed for now, and LAN Airlines, the largest carrier based in Santiago, reports that its flights have been redirected to alternate airports. I’ll be posting travel-related information as it becomes available (especially via Twitter).
Just yesterday, at the New York Times Travel Show, I was chatting about my upcoming trip to Santiago, the Atacama Desert and Patagonia, which is scheduled for next month. For now, my plans remain in place, so that I’ll be able to provide first-person reports, photos and videos. The visit, after what has happened, is now more timely than ever.
